![]() Murthy said: “The two combinations were picked keeping in mind factors such as visibility of keys, prominence, recall value, mneumonics and ergonomics.”Īnother source associated with the project said, “The combination of keys will be helpful for those who already have keyboards. Finally, the department zeroed down on Alt+R and Alt+4. There were options like Alt+`, Alt+3, Alt+\, Alt+5, Alt+2. The survey sampled 7,000 people, giving them several combination key options for the symbol, and asking for their feedback. But the basic idea behind the survey was to ensure uniformity in accessing the symbol.” A few companies came up with softwares which could be downloaded to access the rupee symbol. “One question everybody - from individuals to corporate houses - is asking: How to get the rupee symbol on the screen? The shortlisting of these two options was preceded by an online survey carried out by a private company at the behest of the ministry. Someone using the Alt key on the left of the keyboard will have to press the Ctrl button too - Ctrl+Alt+R or Ctrl+Alt+4, depending on which option is finalised. In this combination, the Alt key on the right side of the keyboard will be made functional.” The right-side Alt key is also known in the tech world as AltGr. Speaking to Mirror, Sudarshan Murthy, one of the committee members and head of applied research at Wipro, said: “One of these two -Alt +R or Alt+4 - will be finalised. ![]()
